The Trustees
The SURF Board of Trustees consists of five employer and five member trustees.
Prof Niel Krige
Chair and Employer trustee
Prof Krige is extraordinary professor at USB and has served as a trustee since 18 November 2005.

Ms Miriam Hoosain
Employer trustee
Ms Hoosain is appointed as Chief Director: Human Resources from 1 May 2023.
Current term expires: 8 May 2026
Prof Tanja Ajam
Member trustee
Prof Ajam is a professor at the School of Public Leadership, has served as an alternate trustee since 7 December 2019 and as a full member trustee since 28 August 2020.
Current term expires: 6 December 2025
Mr Ché Bermosky
Member trustee
Mr Bermosky is a legal adviser at the University, has served as an alternate trustee since 1 January 2018 and as a full member trustee since 7 December 2019.

Mr Peter Kirsten
Member trustee
Mr Kirsten has been with the University for 16 years and is currently the senior benefits practitioner in Human Resources. He has six years’ experience serving as an employee trustee and is dedicated to ensuring that employees are in the best possible position to have a stress-free retirement.

Mr Manie Lombard
Employer trustee
Mr Lombard is Chief Director: Finance and has served as a trustee since 5 May 2011.

Prof C Schutte
Member trustee (alternative)
Prof Schutte is a professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering, which he also chairs. Having been with the University since 2005, he is passionate about staff wellness and representation on relevant forums.

Mr JP Steyn
Member trustee
Mr Steyn, a chartered financial analyst, is a senior lecturer in Investment Management at the Department of Business Management. Having previously worked as a fund manager, he has been with the University for five years and is the company secretary for a number of SU-related entities. These include US Enterprises, LaunchLab and BioCODE. He is also a director at GreenX Engineering.

Prof JL van Niekerk
Employer trustee
Prof Van Niekerk is the dean of Engineering and has been with the University for nearly 23 years. His mission as employee trustee would be to represent staff’s interests and ensure that the fund makes the best decisions in the long-term interest of all employees.

Prof Johan van Rooyen
Member trustee
Prof Van Rooyen is an emeritus associate professor of Investment Management. By his retirement at the end of 2020, he had accumulated 20 years’ service at the Department of Business Management. He previously completed two consecutive terms as employee trustee and is committed to continue serving, discharging his duties with care and diligence.

Prof I Woolard
Employer trustee
Prof Woolard is the dean of Economic and Management Sciences and has been with the University since 2018.
